1. Ensure that your modem is installed correctly
and you can dial out with phone dialer.
Select Start - Programs - Accessories - Phone Dialer to open the Phone
Dialer.
Enter a phone number in the Number to Dial box then
select Dial.
You should hear your modem dial the number if your modem is
installed correctly.
2. Ensure that the necessary network components are
installed:
Select Start - Settings - Control Panel - Network to open the Network
dialog box.
The box labeled The following network components
are installed under the Configuration tab should contain the following
two entries:
Dial-Up Adapter
TCP/IP-> Dial-Up Adapter
If one or both of these are not present they must
be loaded from the Windows-95/98 CD-ROM disk.
The Microsoft network component should be loaded
from your Windows-95/98 CD-ROM disk as follows:
Select Add
- Adapter - Add - Microsoft to load
the Microsoft Dial-Up Adapter component.
Select Add -
Protocol - Add - Microsoft to load the Microsoft TCP/IP component.
Be sure the correct drive letter (corresponding to
your CD-ROM drive) is specified when specifying the pathname to the
Windows-95/98 CD-ROM.
3. Configure a new dial-up account.
Select Start - Programs - Accessories - Dial-Up Networking to open the
Dial-Up Networking folder.
Double-Click the Make New
Connection icon.
Enter a name (e.g. Monticello
Avenue) for the computer you are dialing.
Enter 434 for Area code and 9840019
for Telephone number
and select United States of
America (1) for Country code.
Select Next to create the connection. Select Finish to save it in the Dial-Up Networking folder.
4. Right-Click your Monticello Avenue connection icon.
Select Properties from the
menu.
Under “Connect Using” click Configure
Under the Options tab –
Connection Control
Bring up terminal window before dialing and Bring up terminal window after
dialing should not be selected
Click OK
The General tab should echo the information you
just entered. If you skipped steps 1-3 then enter 9840019 as the Telephone number.
Select the Server Types tab.
Select PPP for the Type of Dial-Up Server.
Select TCP/IP as the Allowed network protocol.
Select TCP/IP Settings.
Select Server assigned IP address option. This will be updated when
connecting to Monticello Avenue automatically.
Select Specify name server addresses.
Enter Primary DNS: as 166.61.234.90
Enter Secondary DNS: as 166.61.234.89
The Primary WINS and Secondary WINS entries can remain as 0.0.0.0
entries.
Use IP header compression and Use default gateway on remote network
options should both be selected (a check mark should appear in the
selection box).
Click OK
5. Select the Scripting tab.
Under Script file the file name should be empty
The Step through script option should not be selected.
The Start terminal screen minimized option should not be selected.
Select OK when all
appropriate changes are entered to all of the three tabs of this dialog
box.
6. Double click on your Monticello Avenue icon.
Enter your username and password.
Click OK.
You are now connected to the Monticello Avenue server.
