10 Tips for Writers

  1. Read the topics and carefully choose just one. Be sure your story matches the topic. You must tell a true story.
  2. Start writing now. Don't wait until the last minute.
  3. Rewrite your story using more details. The best stories are the ones in which the words make it seem so real that the judges can imagine they are there with you.
  4. Be creative. A poem can be a very powerful way to tell a story. It doesn't need to rhyme.
  5. If you have trouble writing, it is all right to tell your story to your tutor or teacher. He or she will help you write it down.
  6. Write more than one story. Let others read them. Ask them which one they like and why. Pick the one you like best to enter.
  7. Read your story aloud to see how it sounds. Think of ways to make it sound better. Edit your writing.
  8. Pick a title that catches the judges' attention. For example, "Sneaky Ghost Twins" sounds more interesting than "A Life Story. as a title.
  9. Remember that all entries are published and placed on the web site. Some may also be recorded at the event. Think about how others will feel if they are mentioned in your story.
  10. Turn your entry in on time. Late entries will not be accepted.
