History and mission

The Alliance Française is the largest cultural network in the world promoting French language and culture since 1883.

L'Alliance Française was created in Paris in 1883, and has since spread worldwide to offer a cultural center and a social forum for people interested in French culture:

Today the name of the Alliance Française is regarded as a testimony to the highest quality in the field of teaching French as a Foreign Language (FLE).

The Alliance Française is dedicated to promoting French language and culture, and to fostering friendly relations between francophone and Francophiles of all racial and national origins.

L’Alliance Française de Charlottesville was founded in 1992 as a non-profit cultural and educational association with members from a variety of backgrounds and diverse age groups. The Alliance Française offers a unique combination of classes, social and cultural events for everyone, in accordance with the standards of the Alliance Française de Paris and as a member of the Federation of the Alliances Française, USA.


World Wide Network

The Alliance Française is the largest network of French language and cultural centers in the world. There are 1,300 Alliance chapters established in a 112 countries, including 140 chapters in the United States, serving 420,000 students.
