Howie Long and Porsche Donate Gift

Fox NFL Sunday analyst Howie Long was in a race all season long with his cohorts from America's #1 Pregame Show to pick the NFL team to score the most points each week. The winner would be able to give a new 2003 Porsche sports utility, the Cayenne S, to his favorite charity. On Sunday, January 19th, Howie Long won the contest, and was presented with the Porsche Cayenne S by Richard Ford, Executive Vice-president and COO of Porsche Cars North America, Inc. Long announced Charlottesville based nonprofit Piedmont CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) would receive the proceeds from the sale of the vehicle, estimated to have a retail value of $65,000. "The Longs have been loyal supporters and great ambassadors of Piedmont CASA for many years now, and we are very grateful to Howie for choosing us as the recipients of such an extraordinary gift," said Piedmont CASA's Executive Director, Ruth Stone. "We rely on volunteers who want to help abused and endangered children, and this type of publicity goes a long way in getting the word out about the work we do."

"I am just so glad Piedmont CASA will receive the proceeds from the sale of this SUV," declared Howie Long. "All over America, there are children living in abusive and neglectful homes. In Charlottesville, Virginia, Piedmont CASA is making a difference for these vulnerable children. I am thankful Piedmont CASA exists, and my wife Diane and I will always have a soft spot in our hearts for the organization and the valuable work it provides," he said. Long lives in Albemarle County with his wife, Diane, and their three sons.

GE Elfuns Give to CASA Kids

GE Fanuc has a very active volunteer organization which calls itself the GE Elfuns. The Elfuns have been extremely generous to the children served by Piedmont CASA. In 2001, they thoughtfully provided gifts to our CASA kids, and in both 2002 and 2003 they purchased back-to-school supplies, everything from backpacks to calculators, for our school-aged children.

This Christmas in 2003, the Elfuns again accepted Piedmont CASA's children as the recipients of their generous kindness. Each CASA volunteer was asked to submit a request for one practical item which each CASA child needs (such as a warm winter coat) as well as one item that the child desires. The Elfuns understood that the wonder of Christmas for this group of children depended, primarily on them, and they took their Santa role very seriously. One Elfun said that he always chooses children of the same ages as his son and daughter and takes them shopping with him as his consultants. This year, he said, his children felt that the kids needed more than they had asked for - so they provided the extra, special gifts to make their holiday memorable.

Each time CASA staff attempted to thank the GE Elfuns for their heartfelt goodness, they were waved away with "This is what Christmas is all about!" Indeed, the Elfuns represent the unexpected miracles that make the holiday so very meaningful.

Over Six Hundred Children Served

On what seemed like an uneventful winter day 2003, Piedmont CASA served its 600th endangered child. However, for those advocating for abused and neglected children in our community, it was an unforgettable moment. "When you look at just one case, sometimes it is hard to feel you are making a difference. But when you look at how many local children have been served by the CASA program, it is easy to see the impact our volunteers are making," says cofounder Carolyn Achenbach.

"There were times in the early days when I wondered if we would find the funding to keep our doors open. Piedmont CASA survived those first few months, and has since thrived because it is fortunate to have a strong group of local supporters and continues to have an incredible group of dedicated staff and volunteers."

"I think the juvenile court judges realized how helpful it was to have a Court Appointed Special Advocate on a case. There is often so much information necessary in determining the best environment to ensure each child's safety and well-being. CASA's do a tremendous job of giving the judges clear, accurate accounts of each child's circumstance, so the best decision can be made," says Achenbach.

With nineteen new CASA's just recently inducted from the spring 2003 training session, it is apparent Piedmont CASA is well positioned to give children a voice in court into the foreseeable future.

Corporate Head Makes Multi-Year
Commitment to CASA

Caring citizens speak often of the need to break the cycle of poverty, ignorance, and abuse in our society. A.N. Culbertson & Company, Inc. made a multi-year commitment to CASA because CASA is such an important agent in breaking that cycle. CASA is both remedial and preventative. By its advocacy for the child alone, CASA adds not only immediate benefit to the life of the child, but betterment of generations to come. The firm intended its commitment not only as underwriting of that endeavor, but as a statement of the importance of CASA to all citizens in our community.
