Emergency Food Bank volunteers take requests for food Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM until noon. The food is transported from the storeroom to a distribution site where it is available for pick up between 1:30 and 3:30 PM that same afternoon.

Based on the recommendations of a nutritionist, who is an Emergency Food Bank board member, an appropriate amount of food to prepare balanced meals for at least three days is provided in each order. These foods include canned fruits and vegetables, fresh milk and bread, cereal, canned fish, beans, soup, peanut butter, pasta, bread and margarine. Baby food and formula, as well as certain special foods needed for medical reasons are provided on request. People living on the street or in temporary quarters with no kitchen may request special orders containing ready-to-eat foods and eating utensils.

Any Charlottesville-Albemarle County resident in need of food may call the Emergency Food Bank directly at 979-9180 or be referred by a local social service agency or church.

Special projects include providing nutritious snacks for children in the Albemarle County Bright Stars Program; delivering orders for individual clients to the On Our Own facility; and providing lunch supplies for homeless people who are being sheltered and fed during winter by the PACEM Program.
