Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle (LV-C/A) is an independent, non-profit organization that offers free, confidential, individualized basic literacy and ESL instruction to adults.

The agency is governed by a board of directors and has two full-time employees. Volunteers work as tutors, help staff the office, conduct fund raising and public awareness activities, train tutors and help to assess student skills and progress.

Our Goals:

Our mission is to promote increased literacy for adult learners in Charlottesville and Albemarle County by training and supporting volunteers to act as tutors for adults who need help with reading, writing and speaking English. We believe that helping adults to achieve their personal literacy goals will enable them to become more competent workers, better informed citizens and more effective participants in their children's learning.

How the Program Works:

Adults who request our services are matched with volunteers we have trained to act as tutors. As the pairs work together, the LV-C/A staff provides materials and instructional support. LV-C/A collaborates with organizations that provide related services. By information-sharing and cross-referrals, we work in tandem with many community agencies, including adult education and training programs, the Jefferson Madison Regional Library, local Social Services departments and Technology Tamers.

Who Pays?

LV-C/A receives grants from the Virginia Department of Education, the City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County. We are also supported by individual donors and fundraisers. Other organization that have supported us:

United Way - Thomas Jefferson Area
Initiative for Effective Non-Profits
BAMA Works Foundation
Dollar General
Charlottesville/Albemarle Community Foundation
Virginia Literacy Foundation
Several local churches, clubs and private foundations

How LV-C/A Began:

LV-C/A was formed in 1983 to provide supplemental tutoring for adults with poor literacy skills who were enrolled in Charlottesville City Schools' Adult Basic Education program. The organization became a full affiliate of Literacy Volunteers of America in 1985 and remained an entirely volunteer effort until the first paid director was hired in 1986.
