6,000—The approximate number of adults in the Charlottesville/Albemarle community who can’t read or write above a fifth grade level. At Literacy Volunteers, we think that number is too many. The literacy skills of these individuals are so deficient that daily functioning in our society is difficult. In addition, there are a growing number of immigrants and refugees who are eager to improve their English skills, find good jobs, and participate more fully in local affairs. Over the past twenty-four years, we’ve helped thousands of adult learners reach their goals: to gain U.S. citizenship, to help children with schoolwork, to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and to become economically independent through gainful employment. But there are still at least 6,000 adults in our community who need our help. Literacy Volunteers-Charlottesville/Albemarle (LV-C/A) is the only organization in our area that provides free basic literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) one-on-one tutoring. The number of learners has increased over 200% in the last five years. Our new ESL classes are an attempt to meet the growing need for our services. That’s where you come in. Be a part of our community of supporters! As a non-profit organization, LV-C/A relies on state and city/county grants for the majority of its funding; these grants leave little room for the growth our organization requires to meet the community’s need for our services. The cost for each learner--taking into account staff support, tutor training, learner materials and facility costs--is $25 per hour per student. 80 percent of every dollar we receive is put into our program, and while we stretch this as far as possible, we can only maintain the status quo. We are able to serve more of the 6,000 adults who desperately need our assistance only through the contributions of our friends, family and neighbors--in other words, you. LV-C/A launched a large-scale fundraising campaign in 2006; the support from our community has given us great hope that we will soon be able to relocate and expand our office as well as take on many more learners. Every day your neighbors courageously come to us asking to learn to read and write or to speak English. Help give LV-C/A the ability to say, “Yes, we can help!” to everyone who comes through our doors. Help us take the 6,000 adults struggling to read and write in our community and turn it into 5,000; help us turn that number into 4,000, into zero. Help us give these individuals the enduring gift of literacy, which truly lasts a lifetime. |
