Join us in giving the gift of literacy to another!

Our volunteer tutors are the heart of our program.  If you’re interested in making a contribution to our community, becoming a tutor will enable you to make a profound difference in a person’s life.

We train you with ways how to teach someone to read and write, or to read and write better, as well as how to speak English or improve a person’s English conversational skills.   Our tutor training textbook Lit Start and our library with a huge variety of materials will help you tutor your student in reading, writing and English acquisition skills.  Lesson planning is initially provided by the Program Director to get you started with your student in making progress toward their individual learning goals, and then additional advice is given upon request.

We schedule about 6-7 training sessions a year for new prospective tutors.  They run about 4-5 hours and are held either on a Saturday or 2 consecutive Monday evenings.   We also offer workshops throughout the year on topics that will enhance your tutoring experience. Most of our tutor/student pairs meet 2 hours a week at a mutually convenient time and place.

It is definitely a commitment, but as a tutor, you will probably get a more rewarding experience than your student by knowing that you’ve helped someone achieve their goals and be more integrated within our community.
