AMTRAK EXCURSION TO WASHINGTON A SUCCESS!

The Rivanna Chapter’s Amtrak excursion to Washington on April 17,2005, was a resounding success and enjoyed by all who participated. It was a beautiful, sunny Spring day with nary a cloud in the sky and mild temperatures as we met at the Charlottesville Amtrak station. The northbound Crescent was running about 30 minutes behind schedule, but members were entertained by a Norfolk Southern local doing some switching opposite the station.  Once we boarded the train, several members headed straight to the diner for an enjoyable breakfast as we rolled northward through the Virginia countryside. Upon arrival in Washington, we enjoyed watching the change-out to electric power for the diesel which had brought the train north from New Orleans. Then we scattered to the wind for sightseeing, train watching and lunch before meeting for our return trip on the westbound Cardinal at 1:05 PM. The Cardinal was right on time, and we all got a kick out of traveling on what is now the Buckingham Branch Railroad from Orange to Charlottesville. We arrived back at Charlottesville right on time, the end of a wonderful day enjoyed by all.
