Rivanna Chapter Charlottesville, VA
February 2005 Meeting
The February Chapter Meeting, to be held at the Golden Corral, 1185 Seminole Trail (US-29 North), will take place on Monday, February 14, 2005. The Social Hour and pay-as-you-go buffet dinner will begin at 6:00 PM. The evening's program will begin precisely at 7:00 PM with a short business meeting, followed by the presentation.
Tonight we will view two wonderful video films concerning Colorado narrow gauge railroads.
Tracks Through Time - Narrated by Dennis Weaver, tells the story of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad's motivation to build the line in 1881 and captures the history of this Rocky Mountain railroad through the years. Enjoy the beauty of the trip on board the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad as the train winds through the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado. 24 minutes.
Rebirth of a Locomotive - Locomotive # 482, a class K-36, 2-8-2 (Mikado), was operated by the Denver & Rio Grande western Railroad from time of delivery by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1925 until 1959. It was pulled out of service and remained dormant until it was acquired by The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Company in 1991. This video documents the massive rebuilding of the 482. It begins with her being loaded, as a derelict locomotive, onto a specially designed truck in Chama, New Mexico. Every step of the restoration is depicted with attention given to the extensive machine shop work involved in restoring the engine to active service.
24 minutes.
