November Meeting

The November Chapter Meeting, to be held at the Ponderosa Steakhouse at Pantops Shopping Center (US-250 East) in Charlottesville, will take place on Tuesday, November 21, 2006. The Social Hour and pay-as-you-go dinner will begin at 6:00 PM. The evening's program will begin precisely at 7:00 PM with a short business meeting, followed by the presentation.

The evening's program will feature the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, with a talk and slide presentation by noted Lynchburg rail historian and author Mr. Aubrey Wiley.

Aubrey has put together a presentation just for us, and describes the program as a potpourri of slides of C&O subjects in central Virginia (with the concentration being on the Charlottesville area), starting in 1960.  

Aubrey Wiley is fortunate in having enjoyed two distinctive careers. He was a photojournalist for over twenty years before pursuing another passion to teach history. In Lynchburg City Schools he taught United States History and European History and was an  assistant professor of Art at Lynchburg College.  His interest in railroading started in his youth (as with most of us) and by his early high school years he was having his train and railroad-people pictures published. Starting in the 1980's he researched, wrote and published the Norfolk & Western Handbook, the Southern Railway Handbook and the Virginian Railway Handbook. The material presented in those books became the foundation for much of the research developed on those railroads and today it is common knowledge. 

Last year Aubrey created and published the first ever all-Virginian calendar. It sold well all over the country and overseas as well. He will have a few of the new 2007 Virginia Railway wall calendars with him at our program. They cost $10 each or two or more for $8 each.
