Trail maintenance

The Charlottesville Chapter maintains the following trails:

Appalachian Trail, Rockfish Gap to McCormick Gap;

Individual trail overseers in the Charlottesville Chapter:

AT Hightop Hut to Smith Roach Gap; Joe Raynor.

AT, Doyles River Trail to Loft Mtn. Campgrounds Amphitheater side trail: Connie Wright.

Our usual schedule for trail maintenance is the last Saturday of the month, except November and December, when there is usually just one work trip on the first Saturday in December. Most often we work on the trails the club and its members oversee, but occasionally we work on other trails.

Maintenance most often consists of cutting back weeds and other vegetation growing over the trail and removing fallen trees by carrying them off the trail or cutting them with handsaws. Other standard maintenance is clearing and building waterbars (structures which run water off the trail) and repainting the blazes on trees.
