Community Preservation Grants Program
Established in 1993, Preservation Piedmont is a local, non-profit
grass-roots organization dedicated to preservation advocacy. The purposes
of Preservation Piedmont are to serve the City of Charlottesville, the
County of Albemarle, and adjacent localities by: promoting greater public
awareness of and advocating historic preservation in the region; protecting
the historic resources of the region; sponsoring educational tours and programs
that encourage public participation in the preservation, restoration, and
ownership of historic and archaeological sites, buildings, structures, and
landscapes significant to the cultural, social, and architectural history
of the region; promoting heritage tourism; supporting and initiating local
projects, partnerships, and studies that help to identify and protect
important community historic resources; and monitoring local and state
government actions on issues affecting preservation of historical,
cultural, and natural resources.
As part of our advocacy mission, Preservation Piedmont welcomes
proposals from non-profit organizations working to promote the protection
of historic resources including significant cultural landscapes.
Preservation Piedmont gives careful
consideration to the potential impact and continuity of the project.
Categories of support include, but are not limited to, documentation
initiatives including surveys, preservation education initiatives, basic
stabilization of historic fabric, support for preservation-related
publications, legal aid for preservation-related cases. Proposals from the
following areas will be considered: City of Charlottesville
and the counties of Albemarle, Greene, Orange, Madison, Louisa, Fluvanna, Buckingham
and Nelson. Grant requests should not exceed $2,000.
Preservation Piedmont has two proposal deadlines each year,
and the Board of Directors makes its funding decisions six months after
proposals are received. This schedule allows our screening committee ample
time to study proposals and to make site visits. Applicants seeking a March decision should apply no
later than the previous October
1st. Applicants seeking a September decision should apply no later than the previous April 1st. An organization that
submits a proposal for one grant cycle must sit out the next grant cycle,
regardless of whether the proposal is funded. In this way, applicants may
not submit a proposal more than once in any twelve-month period. Grants are
made without regard to factors of gender, race, religion, national origin,
or sexual orientation.
All applicants must fully complete the Community
Grant Proposal Cover Sheet (PDF). One hard copy of the grant proposal
should be submitted in writing on the organization’s letterhead and
signed by the organization‘s chief of party or the project’s
principal investigator. The proposal narrative should be limited to no more
than three pages. It should include a clear description of the project or
program including expected outcomes, the relationship of the project to the
organization’s mission or the individual’s objectives, the
relationship of the project to the mission of Preservation Piedmont, a description
of the city or county served, a total budget for the organization (if
available) and a project budget, the qualifications of the project
personnel, a list of Board members (including addresses if available), and
information as to how it will be supported in the future. Letters of
endorsement are welcomed, but must be submitted along with all other
application materials.
Grant recipients are expected to use the funds for the purpose approved
in the grant award, and funds are to be expended within the period of time
specified in the proposal. Preservation Piedmont
requires that grant recipients submit a written report (two-page minimum)
on the funded project no later than one year from the date of the grant.
This report will be used to evaluate the success of the grant. Grant
recipients may not reapply without having submitted a report for the
previous grant. A follow-up visit may be scheduled by a member of the
Preservation Piedmont‘s Board of Directors.
