We are fortunate to live in an area which supports quilting. We have some great sources for fabric, machines and equipment right in town, and we live within driving distance of several more quilt stores. The Virginia Quilt Museum is close by as well.
Because we get so many requests from visiting quilters, we've listed local attractions here. A listing here should not be considered an endorsement--our host, Monticello Avenue, does not permit any commercial activity on our web pages.
The Virginia Quilt Museum hosts periodic shows of contemporary and antique quilts. They have a growing collection of quilts, primarily from the Shenandoah Valley, as well as a collection of antique sewing machines. Their exhibits generally include regional quilts; however, past exhibits have included international and national quilts as well.
Visit the museum's home page to see operating hours and driving directions. Driving time is approximately one hour from Charlottesville--if you don't stop at a quilt store along the way!
This is a month long celebration of the artistic and cultural significance of quilts in our lives, honoring traditional, historic, and contemporary art quilts. Throughout the month of September, exhibits, workshops, and special programs will be offered in over 15 venues in Staunton, Harrisonburg, Verona, and Waynesboro. Cottonwood Quilt Shop has fabrics for quilting and rug hooking, supplies, books and patterns. They carry a line of sewing machines and teach classes ranging from beginner to advanced. Cottonwood has no web site. The shop is located in the Meadowbrook Shopping Center, across Rt. 29 from Barrack's Shopping Center at 2034 Barracks Rd. The phone number is 434-244-9975. Les Fabriques carries a full line of sewing fabrics with a nice selection of quilting fabrics as well as a line of sewing machines. They have stores both in Charlottesville and in Richmond. The Charlottesville store is located in the Shoppers World Shopping Center (near Whole Foods) on Rt. 29, just across from Fashion Square Mall. The phone number is 434-975-0710.
Mr. Hank's, on Grady Avenue, carries a wide variety of fabric, with an emphasis on cottons for quilting, and quilting thread. He has no web site; call 434-971-7119 for information.
Charlottesville also has branch stores of major retailers which sell fabric and/or quilting supplies:
Little Shop in Madison, VA sells fabric, supplies, patterns and books. They teach classes from beginner to advanced. They are located on Main Street in Madison, about half an hour north of Charlottesville on Rt. 29 Business. They have no website; call 540-948-4147 for information.
Rachel's Quilt Patch in Staunton, Virginia, sells fabrics, supplies, patterns and books. They teach classes from beginner to advanced. They are located in the restored C&O train depot in downtown Staunton; see the website for detailed directions. It's about 35 minutes from Charlottesville.
The newest store in our area is Stitches and Shavings in Lovingston, on Business Route 29. They sell fabric, notions, books, and quilting supplies, as well as handcrafted gifts made from wood (the "shavings" part).
Marty Moon has moved Early Times Workshop from Charlottesville to Culpeper. She has supplies for foundation piecing and counted cross-stitch and is glad to do mail order business. Her shop is at 604 S. Main Street, and is open limited hours. Call 540/829-7200 to confirm she's there. At time of this posting, hours are Tuesday and Thursday 7-9, Wednesday and Friday 10-2, and Saturday 9-4. Less than an hour north of Charlottesville.
Patchwork Plus sells a full line of fabrics, with a large selection of quilting cottons. They also sell quilting books and supplies, and a line of sewing machines. They have a selection of quilts on consignment. The store is located on Rt. 42 in Dayton, VA, 6 miles south of Harrisonburg (Bridgewater exit from I-81). It's about 45 minutes from Charlottesville.
Quilted Expressions in Lynchburg, sells fabrics, supplies, patterns, books, and sewing machines. They are about an hour and a half from Charlottesville, south on Rt. 29. Call for directions to the store.
Just a tad further, in Fredericksburg, Richmond, and Roanoke, you'll find quilt stores as well. Certainly lack of fabric will not keep us from quilting!
