NATIONAL TRAILS DAY....a bridge so far

We had a safe and successful National Days Trail.  The 150 volunteers – from seniors to Cub Scouts - built a 100-foot long bridge and cleared over two miles of hilly trail.  The bridge links Charlottesville and Albemarle over Moore’s Creek.  It has its northern foot in Quarry Park and the southern on University of Virginia land.

Take the last in-town right off Route 20 heading south, and from Quarry Park take a walk to the Rivanna. Click here to see pictures of the bridge construction. Click here to see pictures of the dedication ceremony.

Next up for construction is the woodlands link from 5th Street to Old Lynchburg Road and Azalea Park.  We have the necessary easements to complete the encirclement.

RTF Board Members…coming and gone

It is obvious that a volunteer organization depends on the wit, talents and enthusiasm of its members.  After six years we still are partially fueled by the zest of the founders.  An organization is not really tested until it proves that it can rally around new leaders.

This year we are honored to add four new directors.  Steve Campbell joins us as he also takes on the chairmanship of the Charlottesville School Board.  Dan Mahon has unique experience in developing handicapped and interpretive trails in the National Parks.  He is the trails and greenways planner for Albemarle County.  Pat Plocek is the Park Manager for the City of Charlottesville; he is responsible for our magnificent municipal flower gardens.  Jeff Wilbur is a trail runner and stealth builder of low water fords.  Professionally he is a landscape architect with Van Yahres & Associates.

If any of these new guys prove to be as great as Winx Lawrence we will be in clover.

Winx’s ever-present common sense saved us from wandering into any number of pickles from the very first day.  The chance to be warmed by her effervescent personality made the coming of the board lunch a monthly delight.  She leaves us her husband, Fran, as our competent counsel and level builder.  We proclaim August to be Winx Lawrence Month.

SECOND SATURDAYS.....the foundation of progress

The monthly workdays have become an institution of joy and accomplishment.  There is usually a bright mix of newcomers and regulars.  An early March morning snowfall broke our holy streak of twenty-nine consecutive weather-free outings.  Magnetize this schedule to your fridge and come out some Saturday to trail blaze and lunch at the new Riverside.

We meet the second Saturday of each month from 9:00-11:30am.  We have tools, but bring shears or clippers if you have them.  We muster at the trailhead on Melbourne Road just east of the CHS football field and caravan to the work site.  It you want to go directly to the project or have questions, call the workday leader or John Conover at 293-5622.
