ACCOMPLISHMENTS, CELEBRATIONS….Discover our newer trails sections on the south side of the City: · Azalea Park—We have re-established the rustic path we’d originally blazed on National Trails Day. The City’s Parks and Grounds Department helped us plan the lay-out. Then on the United Way Day of Caring, volunteers from Garris, Tobey and Company, P.C., and from SNL Financial cleared an incredibly well-defined path, erected sign posts, and planted trees to restore a native stream buffer. Rivanna Conservation Society gave us the trees, which they in turn had received from the VA Dept. of Forestry. A great example of partnering—we love it! · Azalea Park to 5th St. at Harris Rd. —It took us three Saturdays, but we have finally conquered the grass. · 5th St. at Rock Creek to Jordan Park—Look for superb views of Moore’s Creek, an abundance of birdlife, and a side trail to one of the only true wetland habitats in the City. Parking is available in Jordan Park. · Jordan Park to Avon St.—Using our newest creek crossing, hikers can now safely reach the trail that extends east to Quarry Park and beyond. Park in Jordan Park. As always, please respect the privacy of our generous landowners, and stay on the trail. On our northern trails, look for three new benches for your sitting pleasure between Holmes and Greenbrier. Robbie O’Connell installed these as part of his Eagle Scout project. We all thank him. TRAIL PLANS AND ACTIVITIES.…We have the permits for building a rock hop foot crossing across the mouth of Moore’s Creek! A more accurate description is “boulder hop.” We are currently organizing tools, money, and people-power for this heavy task. This winter we plan to complete an important connection on the north side of the city. We will build and mark trail all the way from the 250 Bypass, across Emmet St., to Barracks Rd. We appreciate the trust extended to us by the commercial and government landowners in this area.RTF needs you. The success of our fantastic trail building project has brought forth new opportunities for people to contribute their time, talents, and skills. We have a new Volunteer Interest Form that spells out specific needs that we have if we are to continue to build and protect our trails. Please consider sharing your talents. Return the form in our small envelope, or contact us by phone or web site. In the future we plan to send out occasional emails regarding special events. If you wish to be included in this RTFriends Email List, please go to the signup page and submit your name. Trail adopters are key to our success. We currently have two trail sections that are unadopted: one near 5th St. and the other near Jordan Park. If interested, please contact us by phone or email. If you love hiking, and you love the work that RTF has been doing, please consider joining the American Hiking Society (AHS). AHS has been supportive of our work for years. They share our goal of building and protecting hiking trails, initiated the first National Trails Day, and have given us grants. If interested visit their web site at www.AmericanHiking.org. If you love trail building and like to travel, consider an AHS Volunteer Vacation. Visit AHS’s web site to read about their 2003 trips in 22 different states including Hawaii and Alaska. Take a winter hike. The leaves are down. You can see the creeks and river. The forests are filled with birds that are either winter visitors or year-round residents. Be a good trail steward. Pick up trash, toss fallen branches off trail, and clip back hip-slapping briers. Contact us about severe problems. SECOND SATURDAY WORKDAYS... Everyone welcome! We meet the second Saturday of each month from 9:00 – 11:30 for fun productive work. We have tools, but bring shears or clippers if you have them. We rally at 8:55 at the Melbourne Road trailhead just downhill from the CHS football field and caravan to the work site. We welcome groups, but their leaders should contact us ahead of time. If you want to go directly to the project or have questions, get in touch with the workday leader. See the schedule of future work days. Charlottesville.....possibly the best trail system in the South!
