Mulch for Sale
The Rivanna Solid Waste Authority (RSWA) produces a top grade mulch
product by recycling waste wood that is brought to the Material Utilization Center.
Stumps, brush, pallets and other usable organic debris, which would otherwise be
landfilled, are now being ground into mulch. Magnets remove nails and other metal
fragments to further refine our mulch product. Mulch is available for sale to the general
public. If you need large quantities of mulch and have no means to haul it, Rivanna can
bring the mulch to you. Just select the quantity and call the Center at 295-3306 to
schedule your delivery or to check on mulch availability.

Mulches are a labor saving device for the gardener and landscaper.
Here are the top reasons to use mulch:
- Holds moisture in the soil.
- Protects roots from damage caused by rapid fluctuations in temperature as well as winter freezes and summer heat.
- Reduces weed problems.
- Inhibits some insect and disease problems.
- Adds organic matter and improves soil health.
- Eliminates root injury caused by cultivation.
- Stops mud splash on walls, fruits, flowers and vegetables.
- Increases performance in growing plants.
- Helps prevent new plants from being heaved out of the soil by frost action.
- Prevents erosion of soil on slopes.
It is best to use a layer about 2" thick. DO NOT pile mulch against the
base of trees, shrubs or plants. It can cause rotting of the stem. It
is best to keep mulch at least 1" away from the base of trees, shrubs and
plants, particularly rhododendrons and azaleas.
