Viewpoints - The 2008 JRAC Photography Show

A slide show of photos from this show and past James River Arts Council photography shows is now available.

Reception and Exhibition

The reception for Viewpoint 2008 brought over 300 people interested in photography to Scottsville. Everyone enjoyed the exhibition and the wonderful food. The work presented at Viewpoints 2008 represents the best collection of photographic work in the four years the James River Arts Council has been producing the annual event. A message from the show's curator is below.

Two months before my daughter’s birth, my son watched as we pushed his old crib into a cleared corner of his bedroom and asked why we needed to make space for her. Because we love her, I said, and flipped down the wheel locks so it would not move. He eyed the crib suspiciously but without protest; in this rare moment I had given a good enough answer.

Most of the photographers I know are also doctors or teachers or pet shop owners. They see patients, teach children, or sell tropical fish and think about photography in the evenings. It is in artwork where they make space for themselves, to be filled with precious, delicate things, like point of view.

In photography they way we see decides the image. The most successful works show the photographer’s heart. As artists we bravely exhibit that which we have made space for, that which we love. We show what is beautiful, or painful, or worthy of a second look; but mostly we pin up our way of seeing the world.

Somewhere after bath times and bedtimes, I sit and think about my photographs, waiting silently in the background for me to see them. In my life where two small children leave little room for anything else, I do not wonder why I keep thinking about them. I have a good enough answer.

I hope everyone enjoyed the show.
