Founded in 1998, the Thomas Jefferson Area Coalition for the Homeless (TJACH) is a broad-based coalition of individuals and organizations working to end homelessness in our region through strategic planning, coordination of services, and public education/advocacy on the causes and impacts of homelessness.
TJACH functions as the region's HUD-defined Continuum of Care Committee, conducting the required activities for establishing a strategic planning process and plan for addressing the area's homeless needs.
TJACH is working toward the day when everyone in our region has a decent, safe place to sleep at night. Our belief is that a region which exhibits and enjoys such wealth should not tolerate the conditions that place our residents at risk of homelessness. By 2010, as a result of TJACH's efforts, our region will feature a coordinated and comprehensive homeless services system that incorporates aggressive prevention efforts (including an increase in the availability of affordable permanent housing) and intervenes effectively to move those who do become homeless thorugh the continuum towards permanent housing. Through this process, families and individuals who are facing the risk of homelessness wil receive the supportive services they need to achieve maximum self-sufficiency and will treated in as smooth, humane, and empowering a manner as possible.
The Thomas Jefferson Area Coalition for the Homeless (TJACH) held its inaugural meetings in 1998. Representatives included the Salvation Army, Region Ten Community Services Board, Department of Rehabilitative Services, On Our Own of Charlottesville, Monticello Area Community Action Agency, and Charlottesville Planning and Community Development Office. Later, TJACH was joined by the Thomas Jefferson Area Planning District Commission, which became the lead entity, and the Thomas Jefferson Area Coalition for the Homeless was adopted as its name. Today, over sixty service agencies, businesses, foundations and individuals make up TJACH.
