Topic: Constructing the Defenses of Peace in the Minds of Men: The United States and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
Guest Speaker: Dr. Raymond Wanner
Wanner will address the central role the United States played in UNESCO's founding, the significant and continuing impact of the United States on the organization, the US Government's love-hate relationship with UNESCO, key program activities such as the World Heritage Convention and the potential of the organization as a platform for the kind of 'soft diplomacy' recently called for by Defense Secretary Gates. Dr. Wanner currently is senior adviser on UNESCO issues to the United Nations Foundation and Chair of the Governing Board of UNESCO's International Institute for Educational Planning. He retired from the US Department of State in 2002 after thirty years of service devoted to international organizations. He earned his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania.
