VHST serves
as a training center for consumer
providers as well as a clearinghouse for
information about consumer provider
training and transition issues for both
mental health professionals and
consumers. VHST began in March 2000 with
start-up funding from the Virginia
Department of Mental Health, Mental
Retardation and Substance Abuse Services.
The ongoing program is funded by the
Virginia Department of Rehabilitative
Services and the Virginia Department of
Mental Health, Mental Retardation and
Substance Abuse Services in collaboration
with Piedmont Virginia Community College.
Who are Consumer Providers?
Consumer Providers are individuals who
have been or who are currently consumers
of mental health services and who, with
training, serve as professionals in the
mental health field. Consumers who join
the mental health workforce as providers
of direct client services are changing
the way that those services are
delivered. Consumer Providers help the
mental health system be more sensitive
and responsive to those who are living
with serious mental illness.
After completing the VHST curriculum,
Consumer Providers will have the skills
that will enable them to work within
mental health organizations in several
different capacities, including peer
support specialist, assistant case
manager, peer counselor, residential
services assistant, or a mental health
support services worker.
