The Artist

A versatile keyboard artist, William McCorkle has performed as organist, harpsichordist, and pianist in solo and ensemble performances throughout the eastern United States and Europe. His research has centered on 17th- and 18th-century French and Italian vocal and keyboard styles, and he is well known for his expertise in keyboard realization. He is in demand as an accompanist and coach of vocal solo and choral repertoire.

McCorkle is artistic director of the Rockbridge Choral Society; since 1979 he has led the group in critically acclaimed performances of oratorios and choral masterworks while also devising programs venturing into opera, folk, and popular music.

As organist and director of music for Lexington Presbyterian Church in Lexington, Virginia, for twenty-four years, McCorkle has led choral performances of major works and has given frequent solo and chamber concerts as organist and pianist. In recent years, he has turned his attention to composition, particularly of choral, solo vocal, and instrumental music for liturgical use. Many of his works have been used at ordinations and other special celebrations of the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia.

William McCorkle is a graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy and Amherst College, and holds graduate degrees from Yale University. He received fellowships for study, research, and performance in Paris, France, working with Nadia Boulanger and William Christie. At Amherst College he has taught piano, organ, and music theory, and served as director of choral music. He is an adjunct keyboard instructor at Washington and Lee University.
